16 July Social Media: The Top 3 Social Media Platforms That You Should Be Using? July 16, 2018By Jason Quick Alumni, General 0 Hello Everyone! This is Raymond Buchanan Jr with some information regarding Social Media and what communication platforms you should be using. During my time as a chapter officer I have learned about how important social media can be when it comes to promoting yourself and your chapter, if you do it in a positive way. After all, what gets posted on the internet usually stays on the internet. So, sit back, relax, and enjoy the read. 1. FACEBOOK Did you know that 90% of young adults (18-29) use this form of social media according to research performed by the Pew Research Center 2015? With statistics like this you should focus more on posting on this communication platform. Facebook is more than just staying connected with friends and family, in fact, you can use this communication medium to promote yourself or your business. For example, if you are a graphic designer you would want to post more about your educational background, what type of design work you do, and examples of your artwork: like a digital portfolio. Facebook is also great when it comes to going live and for having video conferences. You can use these two methods to help promote your business or yourself even further by holding live information sessions or by setting up video conferences with potential clients. I highly suggest that you take a deeper look into Facebook’s capabilities. 2. SNAPCHAT 55% of young adults (18-29) use Snapchat, according to a research study performed by the Pew Research Center in 2015. Snapchat is a great way let your audience know what you are doing simply by posting pictures or creating short videos. You may not think about Snapchat as being a powerful social media outlet, but in all reality, it can be when done right. Post positive pictures that will attract attention and shine light on what you are doing to gain a better audience. The three things that I do is post pictures of myself doing community service, post videos of myself working on design projects, and pictures or videos of myself at leadership conferences. The bottom line is to use Snapchat to your advantage. Just because it only involves posting pictures it doesn’t mean it is not as good as the other social media platforms out there. 3. INSTAGRAM Instagram recently announced it has grown to a community of 800 million users, and of those users, 500 million are considered active. In a perfect world that means you have the chance for 800-500 million users to view your content. This also means that you must be careful at what you post on Instagram and other social media platforms. Personally, I only try to post positive content on my social media pages because who wants to view content that is negative. Instagram is a great way to promote yourself or your business as well because it is a combination of Facebook and Snapchat, meaning, you can post videos and pictures onto your page. Post videos of you doing community service, working on projects, attending conferences, etc. Then post a comment underneath the video informing people what it is about. This is a great way for people to see what you are up to and the type of person you are. Do the same thing when posting pictures. Social Media isn’t going away anytime soon, so why not take advantage of it?
