29 October Illinois Region’s HONORS INSTITUTE and LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE….Super Success! October 29, 2018By Jason Quick Alumni, General Illinois Regional Honors Institute 0 Illinois Region’s HONORS INSTITUTE and LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE….Super Success! Hey Illinois! Hey what? Hey Illinois! Hey what? Show me how to get down. No Way! Show me how to get down. Okay! And get down….we did!!! I’ve been to most every convention and conference since 2012 – and this weekend was one for the books for sure! So many laughs and memories! First, a huge thanks to Moraine Valley Community College. The school facilities, the hotel, the food, and the welcoming atmosphere were top notch! MVCC has an amazing campus and I loved that we were able to see different buildings for different activities. At the hotel, everyone had suites, so we could all spread out and relax at the end of a long fun-filled day. The food…let’s face it…if you can impress with the food at a conference, you’re golden! The fun activities on Saturday night were awesome! The students were able to run off some energy with games in the gym, and the ice cream bar was a huge cherry on top! Then the karaoke was so much fun! Some members have some REAL talent! I think the IL Region should have a talent show some time in the near future. Besides all the fun, fellowship, and networking…we did have some pretty great speakers. Dr. Ignacio Lopez – President of Harold Washington College Mr. Rich Alapack – Founder-Designer-Artist of We All Live Here Dr. Domenico Ferri – Assistant Professor of History at Harold Washington College & 2017 International Honors Institute Speaker Ms. Bea Young – Founder of Bea Young Associates, LLC: Collaboration for Educational Equality The speaker that was my favorite was Rich Alapack. He spoke about his movement called We All Live Here. It is a simple phrase that brings people together, no matter their race, background, socio-economic status, etc. He decorated a huge board for everyone to sign. I’m sure if you’ve seen any pictures from the weekend, you’ve seen the board. IRAA’s big highlight of the weekend was our Honors Study Topic Mind Melters Game! This is the third year we have played this Jeopardy-style game. The seminar groups compete in a live showdown with Michael Storey as our game show host. It is always a good time! Thanks to everyone in IRAA who helped that night and put together the questions. Another wonderful addition was our guests from PTK HQ. The International President, Elda Pere and PTK Foundation Director, Dr. Monica Marlowe. We tried our best to show Elda and Monica just how wonderful the Illinois Region is…and I do believe we succeeded! For the calendar year of 2018, the Illinois Region has hosted the three top leaders of Phi Theta Kappa. Don’t forget back in June at our convention we had President and CEO, Dr. Lynn Tincher-Ladner. The Illinois Region is THE place to be. If you haven’t been involved in a while, come on back! We are still building IRAA and have more and more ways that we are giving back to the region. Find out how you can share your talents and love for Phi Theta Kappa! See you all at Catalyst in April 2019 and at the IL Regional Convention on May 31-June 2. #IAmStillPTK Christina Boyce IRAA President Contact IRAA at firstname.lastname@example.org Related Posts The 2017 Illinois Honors Institute & Leadership Conference Meet The IRAA Officer Candidates Introducing - the new Illinois Regional Coordinator - Adrienne Barkley Giffin!
